近年來，由於飲食的文化研究日盛，加以茹素人口漸增，單單以英國為例，茹素人口在1990年代初期，即已占總人口裡的12％到15％左右。「葷─素」的文化逐漸對立，而就在相互碰撞與解構的過程中，一些過去的語言現象遂告解體，而人們的肉食文化如何被包裹在語言中，當然也就漸漸地被人知道。
